It began as an interesting technical experiment but I soon used it as a means to learn Objective-C and iOS development. I started my Hackintosh journey at 10.4 when I discovered some information on how to do it on a board somewhere. Now that Apple's own chips seem to have tilted the hardware balance very drastically in their favor, I doubt I'll be building that hackintosh, but I do admire the technical skills of those who are still pursuing this. I've long considered building a hackintosh, but held off because I didn't want to give up the chance to update software quickly, without a large chance of introducing potentially serious bugs. But over time, much of the value of Apple products has come from their proprietary methods and unique software. This interest morphed into computers and I used the Motorola Starmax clones, because they allowed using other accessories. I enjoyed building equipment, often for less money than a commercial product would have cost. Years ago, I was an electronics hobbyist and amateur radio operator before Apple first made computers. But it seems like it is more than just for fun. I'm not judging, just wondering - what's the reason for running a hackintosh? Must be more than just for fun (edit: well, no. Seems weird to voluntarily choose a platform with hardware compatibility akin to Linux two decades ago.

Without the tight hardware integration, I personally find it less appealing. Is the MacOS experience really that great for some people? Still - 10+ years of hackintoshing on 1 box. I stopped at Catalina, although I ran High Sierra for the daily - the hoops for the X58 support were getting more convoluted each round, and the X58 wasn't a prime supported platform on the flavor I was using at the time - not the referenced project above.Īlso was starting to experience some of the hardware issues which pretty much dictated the machine was on life support, so it was time to put the system to a noble end. Every update I assume it will break permanently, but Big Sur actually improved Bluetooth/Handoff. I lost wake from sleep after Mavericks, but everything else is going strong, including Handoff and unlock from Watch.

'Officially' meaning that the motherboard needs to be powered on for about 5 minutes before you can start it. Mine officially shutdown at the end of last year. Great work by the OpenCore folks, miles ahead of Clover/Chameleon for clarity of setup and maintenance.

Hackintosh has been fun to maintain for the last near-decade, but I’ll be moving to Apple Silicon for my desktop once I can’t get this to boot the newest macOS. Still rolling my i7 980X X58 Hackintosh “Mac Pro”.
